Leyburn Shawl, or simply 'The Shawl', is the name of a limestone scar of modest height that stretches almost two miles west of Leyburn. The aim of the walk is to walk the length of The Shawl and then visit the village of Wensley on the way back.
Legend suggests - Leyburn Shawl is so called because when Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Bolton Castle, she escaped and fled towards Leyburn, but on the way she dropped her Shawl. Well that is one of the stories.
Setting off from the car park in Leyburn cross from the main square, then the smaller square follow signs for 'The Shawl' along the aptly named Shawl Terrace. Within a few minutes of leaving the town centre you will arrive on the eastern end of The Shawl. Almost immediately the views open out over Wensleydale, the route is signposted and walking is easy.
